This year, three candidates are running to be the Ward 1 Alder Democratic nominee in the primary on September 9. That’s the most important date to show up and make your voice heard. You can register to vote online until August 22, and in person until September 8, but I strongly encourage you to register before August 22 to ensure you are eligible to vote in the primary.

More so now than ever, meaningful change starts at the local level. To students in particular, and I encourage you to register to vote in the city where you live the majority of the year and where there are crucial elections in 2025. For my New York friends, you can even vote in the primary in CT and the general election back home. Your voice matters in New Haven!

Scroll below to find out if you live in Ward 1, how to change your registration to CT, and important dates.

Do I live in Ward 1?

Ward 1 included Old Campus, eight residential colleges (Jonathan Edwards, Branford, Saybrook, Pierson, Davenport, Trumbull, Berkeley, and Hopper), and a number of off campus apartment buildings. If you’re not sure whether your off campus address is in Ward 1 or not, click here.

Important note for people changing their registration from another state:

  • After clicking continue on the first page, select “I don’t have a valid DMV” on the second page.

  • Once you submit the form, you will be asked to print, sign, and mail it to 200 Orange Street, the City Clerk’s office.

  • To make it easier, you are welcome to email me a pdf of your registration form to eliasforalderward1@gmail.com and I can drop it off at the City Clerk’s office for you.

  • Double check that the form is fully complete! The most common mistake is forgetting to sign it.

You can switch your voter registration back to your home state at any time. There are crucial elections in New Haven this year, ones which could be decided by a handful of votes. Register here to bring about the change you want to see!
